weekend off

Last night we had a party in our room. A good 25 people showed up at one time or another, making for mass craziness. Amazing how college kids can go crazy over cupcakes, rice krispy treats, and pita bread with hummus.

My best friend, Kris, came up from her school in North Carolina, and brought Corey up. They spent the night and we sat around joking with Nelson (also an old friend but who is currently dating someone in my building) until 4 am. I kept hugging Kris because I missed her so much over the last two months.

I love Kris for a bazillion reasons, but among them is her understanding of my sometimes inability to talk. Like how recently, it's been so crazy here and I've been a mess, so I haven't emailed her in a couple of weeks or called her at all. When I apologized, she said "Nah, I figured you had to be dealing with some heavy stuff to not get in touch."

It's really cool, too, because my roommie got to talk to Corey and now she realizes how cool he is. Just... witty, intelligent, cool. He's one of those kids I would totally not feel cool enough to hang out with except he makes friends with me and gives awesome hugs with stupid jokes.

Aw. I have girls here at Hollins, but we don't have as good of a time as my friends from home do... maybe because I never get to see the old crowd so we have to pack a lot in. I probably won't get to see them for a long time, but they did make me feel a lot better.

so nette will know what's up

It is my opinion that the professors of Hollins University have gone collectively mad.

Everyone around me claims they are overwhelmed in this, the second week of our spring semester, with work. Word up, sistah!

I spent the entire weekend doing homework and hardly got anything done! Well, actually, I got a lot done, but in comparison with the total amount I have to do, it was very little.

It's weird, too, to really enjoy what you read for class and then you go to said class and everyone sits around calling it ridiculous and stupid. C'mon! It's from the French romantic period! It's supposed to be hyperdramatic and such.

Tonight is doing more work, then interviewing new applicants to live in the community service house, which is sort of exciting. Hopefully we will not let in girls who drink a ton, like the last time. Yes, they do their community service, but they also leave their beer bottles on the back porch. Speaking of service, I gotta figure out what I'm gonna do. I have 7 options for getting trained and doing things, but I am having trouble deciding. Also my class schedule is completely impossible to work around. Yuck.

Ah, well. College life. Whatcha gonna do.

Btw, sorry I didn't call you anymore, Nette. I thought of you a bunch, but generally did not find myself free until midnight every night and didn't think you would want to talk then. Love ya!

peanuts make the baby jesus cry

The vegetarian thing has been going fairly well so far, all things considered. I did break vegetarian to eat chinese, though :-)

Anyway, today I went up to the vegetarian station in my dining hall, as usual, because the food there is actually pretty good most of the time. They have a flyer in front with the ingrediants listed so I looked through the make-up of sweet-and-sour tofu. All looked good. It contained nuts, pine nuts, it seemed, and while I don't like those, sweet-and-sour anything is gooooood.

It wasn't until my throat was swelling up and I was coughing that I noticed the peanuts. I spent a great deal of time after that in the bathroom coughing, gagging, and wheezing. I really wanted to throw it all up, felt like I should, in fact (is that an allergic reaction? I've never had it before)... while my roommate sat on the sinks asking me if she should take me to the hospital.

Then the head chef, who feels I should have inquired about the nuts (which I should have, but I had looked at the ingredients), came in to see about the same thing. Always the fear of someone suing the big company... *sigh* I would have been touched if she had actually cared about me.

Anyway, it made me itchy and nauseaus for the rest of the afternoon... AND it ruined my sweet and sour tofu which was otherwise delicious, as all sweet and sour tends to be.

The good news is that a friend I have missed for a long time left me a message telling me not to eat anymore peanuts, silly. :-)

Yay for everyone being back at school. So many cool people are here now, and maybe I can strike up friendships with some people I like.
